Proeftuin Erasmusveld is set to be really different – a new and sustainable urban residential area in The Hague. Where there were once allotments and sports fields, in the heart of an ecological zone, a new living environment is now being created for plants, animals, and people. It is a prime Dutch and international example of healthy community living in the city; a place for people who have made the conscious decision to live their lives differently. Consciously living differently… it sounds good, but what exactly does it mean? It doesn’t mean that everything is different in this project. If fact, most of what Proeftuin Erasmusveld offers is not new at all. It is the combination of all the different elements that makes the Proeftuin Erasmusveld unique, along with the underlying ambition to create an urban district that is well organized on all fronts in order to meet the current and future needs of society. Examples of this are how we deal with energy, mobility, nature, health, raw materials and – also important – with each other; the people with whom you jointly make your living environment. Initiatives that are in line with ‘Consciously living differently’ are already being tested at the location. These include urban agriculture, temporary occupation with tiny houses, and a circular economy in which existing materials sourced from the area are reused. Proeftuin Erasmusveld will be constructed by Ontwikkelingscombinatie Wateringse Veld (OCWV), a cooperative venture between BPD Ontwikkeling and the Municipality of The Hague.
In the run-up to the creation of the sustainable district Proeftuin Erasmusveld, a temporary experimental garden (proeftuin) has been created with an urban farming field, a carpentry and work shed, a small events area, and five tiny houses. The residents of the tiny houses are able to live at the location from the summer of 2017 for a period of two years.
