Visafslag Scheveningen Haven12.00 noon, 1.00 pm, 2pm, and 3.00 pm English biligual guided tour: The fish auction building was built in 1964 by architect Sjoerd Schamhart. This building has a total length of 400 meters resting on concrete pillars above the embankment in the port. This way the total quay length becomes available for the daily unloading of the fishing boats. The continuous (un)loading bay on the land side is one meter above street level. The 350 meter long and 26 meters wide column-free inside space is daylight illuminated by a 23 elements saw-tooth roof catching the light coming from the northeast, which is necessary for the display and the daylight visual inspection of the herring. The head of the building contains the cafeteria, office space and the mine room (auction room). The mine room has benches tiered in rows of four with sitting space for up to 200 traders. Up front the minemaster (auctioneer) is seated operating the rapidly rotating mine clock.

The 10 meter high cafeteria has a wide view over the harbor entrance. For adornment, the artist Aat Verhoog created a relief of 500 m 2 on the concrete walls in the entrance hall. Because of the transition of the commerce from herring to fresh fish, the automation of the mining process and the shift of fish transport from ships to trucks the building underwent a partial rebuilding and was also put into use for other users. A major building renovation starting in 2018 will have great impact on the functions and the look of the fish auction building. In the seventies Sjoerd Schamhart was one of founding fathers of atelier PRO architekten, together with Hans van Beek.
