11.00 am – 4.00 pm English bilingual guided tour starts every hour: The national sailing centre has been officially designated by The Dutch Olympic Committee*Dutch Sports Federation as a National Topsport Centre. This location meets all the requirements for offering elite athletes an ideal training location including training, learning and living facilities. To create a highly functional building for sailors and their boats, consultations with architects Tonko Leemhuis of NwA architecten BNA and Filip Mens of Architectenbureau Filip Mens as well as the end users, began right from the very first sketches. At ground level is a boathouse equipped with huge roller doors through which boats can be piloted in, mast and all, and then provided with the latest technologies and innovations.

The building also accommodates the warehouses and commercial space used by the adjoining shipping company, Rederij van der Zwan. Yet another part of the building is being leased by NACRA SAILING, a company that builds catamarans. And the Municipality of The Hague will occupy the top floor with views to the North Sea. With a site bounded on three sides by water, beautiful views to the sea, and an existing heritage-style building next to it (the little red house and commercial building in use by Rederij van der Zwan), the architects sought an architectural idiom suited to this context. Two separate buildings are united in a single composition. The point at which the buildings are ‘cut apart’ from each other provides the entrance to both building components. The slanted rooflines and terracing along the facades add variety to the substantial volume of the building.
